Have you ever read a book and come across one moment that was so awful you just had to stop? Well, I have. Back in 2016, I joined the millions of Harry Potter fans who were thrilled to hear about the Cursed Child, and I eagerly joined the online ticket queue to try and get tickets to the play. I failed to get through, but then the following day I was able to pick up a copy of the screenplay.
I soon regretted that purchase. I've been a Harry Potter fan since I was little, and my aunt would buy me the next book for every birthday. Between the movies and the books, it was by far my favourite franchise. I knew it inside out. I guess that was a real challenge when picking up The Cursed Child, because despite having JK Rowling's stamp of approval (somehow), this fanfiction became another book and play along the way. The only thing I am grateful for is that JK Rowling never wrote a follow-up book to it and left it as it was, a piece of fanfiction she supported.
But what is wrong with it? Well, everything. There is so much wrong with it that I couldn't even begin to explain. Other people picked up on it, too. I'm going to give you a list, but I promise the tip of the iceberg is coming, and I'll save it until last.
Let's start with an obvious one: the time turners, the heavy reliance on time turners. Please, any Harry Potter fan knows that you cannot go back that far with a time turner! It's just not done in the books; otherwise, don't we think that it would've been done far sooner? Rowling had previously ruled out the idea that time turners could go back that far, so it was just completely inaccurate.
The core three just don't seem to match up to who they are in the original book. Harry seems harsh and emotionally distant, and considering how he grew up, this is just... not right? Hermione seems insecure, Ron is there for pure comedic value, and it's not at all what any actual fan would expect from them.
Many people have said that it reads like fanfiction, indulging in "what if" scenarios, such as the return of dead characters. But the worst is still to come, and here is where I closed my book.
The worst part, the part that made me roll my eyes and slam my book shut, was Bellatrix and Voldemort having a daughter. It was just a big fat no from me. She loved him, sure, but as a role model, not as a partner. Also, she died, so when on earth would that have happened? It's irrelevant, because it would never have happened.
For me that was an immediate shut down of the play, and whenever anyone is shocked as to why I, the loyal Harry Potter fan, will not go and see Cursed Child, my first response is Delphini.
One thing I will say is that everyone has told me that it's so much better in person than it is in the book, and that's great, I'm sure it is a great production, but if Voldemort and Bellatrix have a child (and they do) then I will not be in the audience.
