As we approach spooky season, the craving to be frightened out of your bones comes back to the surface (at least in my case anyway), and it's time to watch your favourite thrillers. As a genre, horror was never really my thing, but I have come to be very fond of the odd thriller and there are some out there, which are truly excellent. I have trolled the Netflix listings to find five of the best films and TV shows under the thriller category to aid you with your Halloween watching. Here are the five frightmares in question.
5. Get Out Get Out is a 2017 psychological thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut. It stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Lil Rel Howery, LaKeith Stanfield, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Catherine Keener and Betty Gabriel. The plot reads: "Chris, an African-American man, decides to visit his Caucasian girlfriend's parents during a weekend getaway. Although they seem normal at first, he is not prepared to experience the horrors ahead." This film is top-tier, I was shocked by its attention to detail and uniqueness as a thriller.
4. ParasiteParasite is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon Ho, who co-wrote the film with Han Jin-won. The film, starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Park Myung-hoon, and Lee Jung-eun. A summary of the film's plot reads: "The struggling Kim family sees an opportunity when the son starts working for the wealthy Park family. Soon, all of them find a way to work within the same household and start living a parasitic life." If you haven't watched this, where have you been? Parasite is an incredible take on a thriller. I went to see it in the cinema without watching any trailers (I would recommend this) and was totally blown away.
3. MindhunterMindhunter is a psychological crime thriller television series created by Joe Penhall and based on the 1995 true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. David Fincher served as the series's most frequent director and Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, are the stars of the show. The series synopsis reads: "Catching a criminal often requires the authorities to get inside the villain's mind to figure out how he thinks. That's the job of FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench. They attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches. Along the way, the agents pioneer the development of modern serial-killer profiling. The crime drama has a strong pedigree behind the camera, with Oscar-nominated director David Fincher and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron among the show's executive producers."
Mindhunter has been one of my favourite watches this year, it is very well thought out and carefully takes you through the minds of different serial killers. An intriguing watch that will leave you wanting more.
2. Prisoners Prisoners is a 2013 thriller film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Aaron Guzikowski. Its ensemble cast includes Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, and Paul Dano. The film's synopsis reads: "When the police take time to find Keller Dover's daughter and her friend, he decides to go on a search himself. His desperation leads him closer to finding the truth and also jeopardises his own life." This was the film that got me into the thriller genre. It is a captivating and devastating story, but the acting throughout is superb.
1. Black MirrorBlack Mirror is a British anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker. The series is inspired by The Twilight Zone and uses the themes of technology and media to comment on contemporary social issues. Most episodes are written by Brooker with involvement by the executive producer Annabel Jones. The series synopsis reads: "In an abstrusely dystopian future, several individuals grapple with the manipulative effects of cutting-edge technology in their personal lives and behaviours." This would not be a list of thrillers without Black Mirror featuring. There is nothing else quite like it, each episode takes you on a different journey and asks thoughtful and poignant questions.
